Dr Sultan Alotaibi is an Assistant Professor and Consultant Optometrist at the Optometry Department of King Saud University. He is a BCLA Fellow and a Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.
His research focuses on the behaviours of tear film cytokines, proteins, and neuropeptides in ocular and systemic conditions. Sultan specialises in the changes of inflammatory markers of the ocular surface, particularly concerning corneal immune cells and corneal nerves. Sultan also investigates the role of telomerase complex in cell lines, including HeLa and CECL. His current research addresses several conditions, including dry eye disease, diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, neurodegenerative diseases, traumatic brain injury (TBI), migraines and aging.

The areas of expertise of Dr Sultan include study designs, project management, data collection, tear film collection, biochemical assays (including ELISA, qPCR, PCR), cell culture, and DNA and RNA isolation. Dr Sultan Also expert in corneal imaging, including the corneal confocal microscope. Teaching undergraduates and postgraduates, and supervising PhD students, are also areas of interest.
