Hepatokines Fetuin-A and inflammatory marker CRP status in Saudi metabolic syndrome patients
The exact involvement of obesity in the association with the serum levels of Fetuin-A among obese Saudi adults has not been fully clarified yet. Therefore, the present study is the first in Saudi Arabia to determine the association between serum Fetuin-A levels and obesity among Saudi adults. We also aimed to explore the mechanisms that link obesity and other parameters.
A total of 239 adult Saudi (men and women) individuals consented to participate in this observational cross-sectional study. The participants were divided into three groups: Group-1 comprised of healthy control participants (36.8 ± 12.4 years), Group-2 comprised of overweight participants (44.2 ± 12.6 years), and Group-3 comprised of obese participants (46.3 ± 10.9 years). The levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), lipid profile and serum insulin were measured. Homeo¬static model assessment-β (HOMA-β) and homeostatic model assessment-IR (HOMA-IR) were calculated. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was done to measure Fetuin-A and C-reactive protein (CRP).
The lipid profile and blood pressure measurements were significantly different between the study groups. The HOMA-IR and FBG of the overweight and obese group were higher (p<0.01) as compared to the control group. The levels of CRP in the overweight group were the highest, followed by the obese and control groups, respectively. The serum insulin levels for the overweight group were the highest (p<0.01) followed by the obese and control groups, respectively. A significantly reduced (p=0.019) HOMA-β value was noted in the overweight and obese groups, respectively. Serum levels of Fetuin-A were not significantly different between the study groups. In obese groups, Fetuin-A was significantly and positively correlated with triglycerides (TG) (p=0.05, R= 0.21) and HOMAR-IR (p=0.05, R= 0.25).
The serum levels of CRP, but not of Fetuin-A, were significantly raised among overweight and obese Saudi adults when compared to the control group. However, Fetuin-A showed a significant direct association with levels of triglycerides and insulin resistance among the obese.
