Abstract
This research studied the effect of daily journey geographic constraints of King Saud University
students on their learning achievement, participating in extracurricular activities and visiting the
library. The data collected from a Random sample of the students of King Saud University which
consists of (854) students during the academic year (2016) using the online survey. The
technologies of geographic information systems have been employed to build spatial model to
measure the distance and taken time for the daily student drive from their houses to the
university, whereas 30% from the students’ houses are away of 20 km and there are 35% of the
students who take about 40 minutes to arrive the university, there are 8 % who take about one
hour to arrive at the university. Theses distances and taken time in Riyadh that suffers from high
population density, great numbers of vehicles and urbanization area which makes the daily drive
to be very stressful, exhausting and affecting their academic achievement. The students who
answered that the house location affects their learning achievement are about (68.42%) and about
(63.95%) answered that their house location affects their attendance to the activities held by the
university. Regarding visiting the library, about (58.16) responded that the house location affects
their visit to the library. The study clarified that there is a negative correlation between the
students’ delay times and their academic rate, in other words as the delay times increase as the
GPA is less and therefore the academic achievement is less. Finally, the study suggested to
specifying and rescheduling the work times for employees and students in Riyadh to reduce the
daily drive times, reducing the environmental pollution and economic depreciation in addition to
increasing the student academic achievement through delaying the beginning of study day by one
hour to begin at 9.00 a.m. instead of the current time on 8.00 a.m.
