Investigation of Focus in Bedouin Hijazi Arabic

Experimental studies show that the prosodic realization of focus varies across Arabic dialects. This study examines focus in Bedouin Hijazi Arabic. Using the question-and-answer paradigm, eleven native speakers read four syntactically similar target sentences in three focus types: neutral, information, and contrastive focus. Acoustic analysis and statistical tests confirmed that the following facts. First, there are significant changes (p < 0.05) in prosodic features (mean F0, maximum F0, minimum F0, mean intensity, duration, and excursion size) across the three focus types, highlighting the prosodic effect of focus on certain aspects of prosody. Second, both information and contrastive focus consistently show higher values in the acoustic measurements compared to neutral focus, suggesting speakers use a wider pitch range and increased intensity to highlight important information. Third, in the post-focus region, a systematic decrease in prosodic parameters from neutral focus to information focus to contrastive focus was observed, reflecting a shared strategy to maintain clarity and emphasize focal elements.
