NovelCross-Linked Poly(Ionic Liquids)-Magnetite Nanoparticles forOil Spill Remediation

This work aimed to prepare low-cost surface modification magnetite nanoparticles and apply them effectively for oil spill recovery, thereby contributing to the protection of marine environments. Herein, two novel cross-linked poly(ionic liquids), TTBE and TTBH, were synthesized using low-cost materials in a short synthesis route and applied to magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) surface modification, producing TTBE-MNPs and TTBH-MNPs. TTBE-MNPs and TTBH-MNPs were characterized using different techniques and applied for oil spill recovery at different MNPs: crude oil ratios and contact times. The results were promising, with TTBE-MNPs and TTBH-MNPs achieving an oil spill recovery performance (ORP) of 97.3% and 99.5, respectively, at a ratio of 1:1 and a contact time of 10 min. TTBH-MNPs showed higher ORP than TTBE-MNPs, which could be ascribed to the longer alkyl chain of TTBH used for TTBH-MNPs surface modification compared to TTBE. Moreover, TTBE-MNPs and TTBH-MNPs showed excellent reusability in four cycles, with a relative decrease in their performance with an increased cycle number. The OPR of TTBE-MNPs and TTBH-MNPs decreased from 97.3% and 99.5%, at a ratio of 1:1 and a contact time of 10 min, in the first cycle to 77% and 81% in the fourth one at the same ratio. The decrease in the OPR with an increase in the cycle number could be referred to as the change in TTBE-MNPs and TTBH-MNPs polarity during reuse. Finally, the prepared MNPs' low cost, high efficiency for oil spill recovery, and reusability demonstrate the potential of TTBE-MNPs and TTBH-MNPs to protect marine environments from oil spills effectively, thereby contributing to preserving natural resources.
