Space Configuration Impact on Student Experience in Educational Buildings: The Case of the College of Architecture and Planning at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
This research aims to evaluate the student socio-spatial experience of common spaces within an educational building by assessing how the spatial layout of the College of Architecture building influences students' experiences and interactions with each other and the facility. The study will quantitatively measure and evaluate the spatial properties of common spaces, followed by correlating these findings with observations through movement mapping of students’ behaviour and engagement in those spaces. The visibility graphs analysis (VGA) reveals the properties of the points in space, such as directed views, choice, integration, and compactness. The data will be analysed by comparing mapped behavioural data collected from surveys with space syntax analyses. The themes of findings will emerge from this comparison as human-environment issues such as views and wayfinding. Finally, the outcomes of this study provide insights for educational institutions aiming to optimise common spatial design to enhance the functionality of the building and social experience.
