Abstract
Researchers have encouraged the use of collaborative tasks in English as foreign language (EFL) classrooms because such tasks promote language learning. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of individual and collaborative vocabulary-learning work in the form of jigsaw tasks on the elementary learners vocabulary. The study was conducted for two weeks with 28 young female Saudi EFL learners. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups, an individual group and a collaborative group, each consisting of 14 learners. Pre-tests, post-tests, treatment tasks and attitudinal questionnaires were used to answer the research questions. Independent- and paired-samples t-tests were used to analyse the study results. The results indicated that the collaborative vocabulary-learning tasks had a more significant effect on vocabulary gain than the individual tasks. The majority of participants preferred using the collaborative technique rather than individual learning to learn vocabulary. The study provides recommendations for further research.
