Exploring fungi on mangrove associates: novel family Neoarthriniaceae and two novel species in Neoarthrinium and Oncopodiella

Mangrove-associated plants in the Gulf of Thailand represent one of the most diverse vegetation communities, growing alongside true mangroves and contributing significantly to overall communal diversity. This research focuses on two mangrove-associated plants, Acrostichum aureum and Hibiscus tiliaceus, found along the estuary banks in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, central Thailand. Two novel ascomycetes, Neoarthrinium aquaticum and Oncopodiella lignicola, were isolated from submerged and decaying stems of Acrostichum aureum and Hibiscus tiliaceus, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses of multiple loci analyses of nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU), internal transcribed spacer (ITS), beta-tubulin (TUB2), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1), nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU) and nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU) confirm the placement of Neoarthrinium aquaticum within AmphisphaerialesSordariomycetes and Oncopodiella lignicola within OncopodiellaceaeOncopodiellalesDothideomycetes, respectively. We also introduce a new family, Neoarthriniaceae, to accommodate the genus NeoarthriniumNeoarthrinium aquaticum differs from N. brasiliense in the shape of conidiogenous cells and conidia size. Oncopodiella lignicola formed a sister clade with O. trigonellaOncopodiella lignicola is distinguishable from O. trigonella by conidia size and absence of horns. The morphological descriptions, multi-loci phylogenetic relationships and illustrations of the new taxa are provided.
