Thomas' Calculus: Early Transcendentals

This is the primary text for the course, and all lecture material follows its ordering and notation. Section numbers given in the syllabus refer directly to this edition.
The book is well suited to the way the course is taught. It develops the integral from finite sums rather than presenting it as a formula to memorise, and each technique of integration is introduced with worked examples before the exercises generalise it. The SI Units edition uses metric units throughout in its applied problems, which matches the conventions you will meet in your engineering and science courses.
A word on how to use it. Read the worked examples before attempting the exercise sets — most exercises are variations on an example from the same section, and the difference between a student who finds integration straightforward and one who finds it impossible is usually just the number of worked examples they have followed line by line. The exercises at the end of each chapter are the best preparation for examinations, as they mix techniques without telling you which one to use, which is the actual skill being tested.
Please note that section numbering differs between editions. If you are working from an earlier edition, check the section titles rather than the numbers against the syllabus.
