Dihydropyrimidinones as Potent Anticancer Agents: Medicinal Chemistry Perspective

Dihydropyrimidinones scaffold and potential anticancer targets

Heterocyclic chemistry is a broad branch of organic chemistry that contributes to almost one-third of all recent publications in the field, and it is becoming a more important subject for research. Scaffolds of dihydropyrimidinones (DHPMs) belong to this branch of treatment and are discussed in this chapter, as well as the pharmacological activities of the most effective compounds. This chapter includes works of literature from the last two decades and provides a detailed guide to understanding how to design and synthesize new DHPM entities from heteroaromatics. By using experimental models, the ability of DHPMs to act as an antitumor agent, anticancer agent, antifungal agent, antiinflammatory, antidepressant, antihypertensive drug, and anti-HIV agent has been investigated. The pyrimidine ring is present in thymine, cytosine, and uracil and is an essential part of nucleic acids, DNA, and RNA and plays a key role in the potential mechanism of action; the derivatives of pyrimidine compounds are used in medicinal chemistry for several purposes. Scientists were interested in discovering novel (DHPM) molecules because of their therapeutic properties. A multicomponent reaction (MCR) is an organic reaction that produces more starting materials than it consumes for the desired product; DHPMs are produced through multicomponent reaction (MCR).
