Traffic Characteristics of Virtual Reality over Edge-enabled Wi-Fi Networks
arXiv Preprint
Virtual reality (VR) applications are increasingly used in education, healthcare, entertainment, and other fields. Wireless VR supported by edge computing offers improved mobility while reducing the processing demands, energy consumption, and cost of head-mounted displays. However, transmitting high-resolution VR content over wireless networks presents significant challenges due to stringent bandwidth, latency, and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. This paper investigates the traffic characteristics of VR applications over edge-enabled Wi-Fi networks. It first examines the theoretical throughput requirements for an ideal VR experience and a commercially available VR headset. It then analyzes network traffic generated by different VR applications in an experimental edge-computing environment. The findings provide insights into traffic patterns and communication requirements that can inform the design of future wireless network architectures, protocols, access mechanisms, and scheduling algorithms.arXiv Preprint
