PHRM 314
This integrated course deals with two sections. The first section covers the introduction of basic principles of pharmacology, pharmacological actions, therapeutic uses, mechanisms of action, adverse effects, contraindications, and drug interaction of multiple drug groups, including autonomic drugs and cardiovascular drugs.
The practical part of this section covers the effects of the above-mentioned drugs mainly via in-vitro experiments. .
The fundamental concepts and the technical analyses focus on:
• Covering acetylcholine pharmacology and examining the effects and the site of action of different agonists on the isolated guinea pig intestine.
• Analyze the impact of various agonists and antagonists on an isolated guinea pig intestine.
• Examine the pharmacological effects of specific agonists and their antagonists on an isolated guinea pig ileum.
• Evaluating acetylcholine pharmacology on isolated frog rectus abdominis using different modulators.
• Evaluating the effect & site of action of different drugs on isolated rabbit's heart using Langendorff technique.
The second section of this course will be subdivided into three sections:
• The first section will be given in lab 6 and lab 7, which includes an introduction to the experimental techniques, and the calculation methods used in organic chemical syntheses laboratories. The practical part will include the synthesis of a cardiovascular agent followed by yield calculation, melting point determination, structure elucidating by different spectroscopic analytical techniques.
• The second section will be given in lab 8, which includes Computer-aided drug design (CADD): molecular modeling software.
• The third section will be given in lab 9 and 10, which includes applying suitable software program such as Marvin Sketch, ChemSketch and websites to calculate a variety of molecular descriptor.
