Rowe and Lillo:   Legitimate Appropriation or Literary Piracy?

The  period's inability to draw up clear rules regarding imitation allowed as we shall see contemporary critics to regard George Lillo's (1693 - 1739) The London Merchant (1731) as a distinct dramatic innovation.  Yet, the play was heavily influenced by The Fair Penitent (1703) which was one of the most popular tragedies of the eighteenth century and written by the major tragedian of the period, Nicholas Rowe (1674- 1718).67 Critics, however, seem to have overlooked the similarities between the two

plays and thus have denied Rowe his due place in theatre history.
