Dictionary Skills (2015/2016)

Required Textbooks and other Materials: -A book entitled: Use your Dictionary: A Practice book for users of Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English and Oxford Students’ Dictionary of Current English. -A booklet entitled: “An Introduction to Dictionary Skills.” (Both are available in AlQuwaifel Copy Center in King Abdullah Road.) -Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, 8th edition with a compass CD-ROM. · Course Description: This course acquaints students with different types of specialized and general dictionaries and the characteristics of each. Students are trained on how to skillfully use the dictionary (such as selecting the right type), and gaining speed in looking up words. Students are familiarized with the different symbols used in dictionaries with special emphasis on phonetic transcription, intonation, and stress as a means of using dictionaries to develop correct pronunciation. Students are trained in the use and formation of derivates. They are also acquainted with their organization in a dictionary; the relationship between suffixes, prefixes, affixes, derivation rules, and their role in building up words and their meanings. Students are taught to understand primary, secondary and figurative meanings of words. · Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to familiarize students with visual aids and symbols, abbreviations, order of entries, and cross-references used in dictionaries. The course focuses in particular on dictionary use and its relation to (i)- writing, e.g. alternative spellings, inflected forms, acronyms and abbreviations, word divisions, (ii)- speaking, e.g. sounds, phonetic symbols of consonants, vowels, stress, (iii)- grammar, e.g. countable/uncountable nouns, regular/irregular noun plurals, plural occurrences, comparative/superlative forms, etc., and (iv)- semantic information, e.g. correct definition, meaning of phrasal and prepositional verbs, prefixes and suffixes, compounds. In addition to the use of monolingual dictionaries, the course also introduces the students to other kinds of dictionaries such as bilingual and specialized dictionaries and thesaurus. The course has other long-term objectives. It prepares students for the future translation courses. It also provides them with some basic terms and notions that they will develop in the linguistic courses.
