POLICE

The police is a personification of the state designated to put in practice the enforced law, protect property and reduce civil disorder in civilian matters. Their powers include the legitimized use of force. Police forces are often defined as organizations separate from any military forces, or other organizations involved in the defense of the state against foreign aggressors.

The responsibilities of a police officer are often extremely broad. Although their main responsibilities are usually keeping the peace, enforcing the law, protecting the public and property, and the prevention and detection of crimes, officers are usually expected to be able to respond in some fashion to a wide variety of situations that may arise while they are on duty.

In some cases, police are assigned to work "undercover", where they conceal their police identity to investigate crimes, such as organized crime or narcotics crime. In some cases this type of policing shares aspects with espionage.

Police officers are generally sworn to an oath, and are granted the power to arrest and imprison suspects, among other procedures. Some police officers may also be trained in special duties such as counter-terrorism, surveillance, child protection, royalty or diplomatic protection, and investigating major crimes such as fraud, rape, murder or drug trafficking.

Some Islamic societies have religious police, who enforce the application of Islamic Sharia law. Their authority may include the power to arrest unrelated males and females caught socializing, to enforce Islamic dress-codes, and store closures during Islamic prayer time.
