Prof. Mohammad Iqbal Khan

Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Khan is a Professor of Structural Engineering at King Saud University (KSU), Saudi Arabia, and a Founding Member and Managing Director of the Center of Excellence for Concrete Research and Testing. He is an internationally recognized scholar, researcher, educator, and quality assurance expert with extensive contributions to structural engineering, advanced construction materials, engineering education, accreditation, and professional development. His distinguished career spans more than three decades of academic, research, consultancy, and leadership experience across the United Kingdom, North America, and the Middle East.

Dr. Khan earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, in 1999. He has held academic appointments at several renowned international institutions, including the University of Nottingham, UK, where he served as Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering. He also held Adjunct Professor appointments at Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA, and the University of Sherbrooke, Canada. Through these roles, he established strong international research collaborations and contributed significantly to teaching, research, curriculum development, and academic excellence.

His research interests encompass a broad range of topics in structural and materials engineering, including blast- and impact-resistant structures, concrete-filled steel tubular systems, fiber-reinforced concrete, polymer and cement-based composites, nanotechnology applications in concrete, self-compacting concrete, sustainable construction materials, environmental assessment, predictive modeling, and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in civil engineering. His work has advanced scientific understanding and provided innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.

He is consistently recognized among the world’s top 1% scientists - every year since 2020, across both Single‑Year and Long‑Career citation impact indicators. He has established an exceptional record of scholarly achievement. He has published more than 350 refereed journal and conference papers, holds 25 granted patents, edited or co-edited seven scholarly books, and authored or co-authored two books. He has supervised numerous MSc, PhD students and several Post-Doc fellows. 

Dr. Khan has successfully led and participated in numerous nationally and internationally funded research projects and developed collaborative research partnerships with institutions in the United States, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. His innovations and research contributions have earned him four Gold Medals, two Silver Medals, and multiple Excellence and Distinguished Achievement Awards.

A Chartered Engineer (C.Eng.) recognized by the Institution of Engineers, and an Approved ACI Certified Examiner authorized to conduct American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification Programs. He has successfully trained and certified over 300 engineers for major strategic projects across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), King Saud University Strategic Projects, and the Haram Expansion Projects in the Holy Cities of Makkah and Madinah, contributing significantly to the development of professional engineering competencies in the region.

Beyond his research achievements, Dr. Khan has made significant contributions to engineering education, quality assurance, and accreditation. He has served on several national committees responsible for developing engineering education frameworks, enhancing the competitiveness of engineering colleges, and designing Engineering Graduate Exit Examinations, Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examinations, and Professional Engineering (PE) licensure examinations in Saudi Arabia. He has also authored and co-authored instructional manuals for these examinations and contributed to the development of engineering standards and accreditation-related scholarship.

A recognized expert in accreditation and academic quality, Dr. Khan has provided ABET and NCAAA consultancy services to numerous universities across Saudi Arabia. He has served as both a member and chair of NCAAA review panels for institutional and program accreditation and, as an ABET Program Evaluator (PEV), has conducted accreditation reviews of engineering programs at universities across the United States. His extensive contributions have played a pivotal role in advancing quality assurance, accreditation, and academic excellence in engineering education at both national and international levels.
