MSE-522: Structure of Materials

  1. Geometry of crystals: Lattices, crystal systems, symmetry, primitive and no primitive cells, lattice directions and planes, crystal structure, atomic size and coordination.
  2. Diffraction, The Bragg law, X-ray spectroscopy, diffraction directions and methods, Scherrer formula for particle size estimation. Interpretation of diffraction patterns and intensity distributions.
  3. Metals, ceramics, alloys and composite materials. Applications of x-rays, electrons and neutrons.
  4. Application to scattering in perfect and imperfect crystals and amorphous materials
  5. Techniques for materials characterization: Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy: Basic understanding of the microscopies and materials imaging examples.
  6. Continuum description of structure emphasizing the tensor analysis of distortions in solids.
