Course Objectives :
The course aims at giving the students the sufficient knowledge to understand the
mechanisms that govern modern computer networks, with a focus on the Internet. It
covers the following topics:

  • Overview (computer networks uses, layered architecture).
  • The Data Link Layer (error control, flow control, LANs, Ethernet).
  • The Network Layer (routing algorithms, IP).
  • The Transport Layer (congestion, TCP, UDP, sockets).
  • The Application Layer (some examples).

 

Suggested text books and reference material:

  1. Computer Networks (4th edition) by A. S. Tanenbaum
  2. Data Communications and Networking by Behrouz A. Forouzan, Fourth Edition, McGraw-Hill, 2007

 
Prerequisite: CSC 227
You are strongly expected to have basic knowledge of  the subjects of Computer Operating Systems.

·   You have to post one question and its answer on the course website by the end of every week. Also, you are required to evaluate someone else’s posted  question and its answer from the previous week, giving score out of 5.
