This course covers the emergence of “Theory,” from Russian Formalism, New Criticism, Cultural criticism to more contemporary schools of critical thought. Students learn to: identify the major trends of twentieth century literary criticism; describe Anglo-American New Criticism in relation to Russian Formalism; explain the development of modern criticism in Structuralism and Marxism; and explain how cultural studies have an inclusive view of modern criticism.
