introduction/brief CV

Prof. Dr. Abdel Halim Harrath is currently a Professor at the College of Science, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He has a distinguished academic career spanning over two decades, progressing from Assistant Professor to full Professor, along with postdoctoral positions at international universities and institutions such as the University of Barcelona, Spain (2006), and the “Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique” (CNRS) in Nice, France (2007/2008). He is a highly acclaimed scientist in the field of biological sciences, recognized both regionally and internationally for his groundbreaking contributions. He has authored over 300 research articles published in ISI-indexed journals, making significant contributions to his field. Since 2022, he has been ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide, according to the prestigious Stanford University/Elsevier rankings. His role as an Associate editor for several journals, including Frontiers in Endocrinology and Molecular Medicine Reports, indicates a respected position in his field. He has secured substantial research funding, including leadership on projects under the National Plan for Science, Technology, and Innovation (NPST) that address critical health challenges. He has also established numerous international collaborations with renowned and pioneering researchers from various universities worldwide, including Sapienza University (Italy), the University of Nitra (Slovakia), the University of Florence (Italy), the University of Michigan (USA), and Wayne State University (USA).

areas of expertise

Prof. Harrath’s research focuses on how internal and external factors interact with cellular and tissue structures, spanning from genes and proteins to entire tissues and organs, resulting in emergent properties and functions that ultimately influence both human and animal health. His expertise encompasses diverse fields, including cell physiology, molecular biology, toxicology, and pharmacology, with a strong emphasis on the fetal programming of diseases and reproductive health.

Throughout his prolific career, he has pioneered studies on fetal disease programming and explored the mechanisms underlying health disruptions, such as infertility, endometriosis, kidney failure, aging, and cancer. Specifically, he investigates the roles of oxidative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy in these conditions. Additionally, his research extends to exploring protective agents, including plant extracts, against cellular disruptions, with the goal of developing preventive and therapeutic strategies. His lab employs a combination of classical techniques, such as histopathology, immunofluorescence, western blotting, and RT-PCR, alongside advanced methods like RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analysis, to uncover the molecular pathways involved in health disorders and diseases.
