OPTO425 Microbiology I

Course Description
This course provides and introduction to the history of Microbiology and physiology and morphology of bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses. Topics to be covered include microbial growth and death, culture media, methods for the detection of microbial growth and methods of control and destruction.
 
Course Objectives
· To provide the Optometry student with a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to Microbiology including basic knowledge about the history of Microbiology.
· To develop an understanding of sterilization, disinfection, antiseptics and antimicrobial chemotherapy.
· To gain an overview and identify the nature of microorganisms, its habitat and behavior in different environments.
· To provide the students with a basic knowledge about the importance of the relationships between microbes and the surrounding environment in terms of physical, chemical and biological factors.
· To provides the students with basic theoretical and practical aspects of various groups of microorganisms.
· To provide the students with basic knowledge of bacteriology, virology, mycology, and parasitology.
· To provide the students with the basic concepts of microbial growth and death.
· To introduce the basic concepts of disinfectants, antiseptics, preservatives, methods of sterilization, aseptic techniques and general microbial control.
· To provide the students with a basic knowledge about the mechanism of antiviral, antimicrobial and antibiotics and the relationships between microorganism and the host cell.
· To provide the students with the basic knowledge to differentiate the differences in structures and behaviour among bacteria, fungi and viruses.
