521TRAJ: Culture and Translation

Course Description:

Culture and Translation aims to introduce students to the essential aspects of culture and to enhance their sensitivity to the role of culture in translation. In particular, it explores the relationship between language and culture, and its implications for translation. Topics will include, but are not restricted to, the issue of translatability across Arabic and English, translating political and emotional concepts, principles of categorization, the conceptualization of colors, and different construal of the world as a reflection of culture in grammar.
