1142 ENG. English Writing Skills

This is an introductory course in ‘Writing’ where students are to be taught basic writing skills. They are trained to build vocabulary that would be required to write a good paragraph. They are made to produce grammatically correct sentences. They are equipped with the skill of exploring ideas and then arranging and organizing them in the form of a paragraph. The students practice writing the topic sentences and supporting ideas. They also learn the art of cohesion and simple style. Focus is also made on the mechanics of writing and the students learn punctuation, capitalization and other necessary tools. They are taken through the steps of brainstorming, prewriting activities, outlining, drafting and editing.

Course Outcomes
The aims of the course are as follows:
- To be able to write a simple and cohesive paragraph.
- To be able to use a good writing sequence.
- To be able to write good topic sentences.
- To be good in punctuation and capitalization.
- To be in a position to write the main idea and supporting sentences.
- To be good at writing compound sentences with but, so and other linking words.
- To write formal and informal letters.
