Course Description:
The course provides the student with the basic knowledge and skills in assessing and managing common orthopaedic and rheumatic disorders. This will include aetiology, pathology and main manifestations of these disorders. Special emphasis will be given to the physical therapy management of these cases. The medical and surgical treatment for these cases will also be outlined. The student will also perform clinical practice at the hospital.
Course objectives:
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the aetiology, pathology and manifestations of the common orthopaedic and rheumatic disorders.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of physical therapy management of the common orthopaedic and rheumatic disorders.
3. Discuss, select and perform the appropriate assessment and physical therapy management of these common conditions.
4. Demonstrate basic clinical skills of problem solving, clinical decision-making, and clinical reasoning.
5. Demonstrate critical thinking skills.




Field Experience:
Students will be attending the orthopaedic clinic in King Khalid university hospital (in patient) and King Abdul-Aziz university hospital (out-patient).
Goals of clinical practice:
1. The student will be able to collect data about the patient condition directly and indirectly within a reasonable time.
2. The student will be able to apply an appropriate physical examination to obtain a measurable data.
3. The student will be able to write a proper physical therapy report using (SOAP) format.
4. The student will be able to set achievable treatment goals.
5. The student will be able to apply realistic physical therapy treatment in reasonable time frame.
6. The student will develop an understanding of physiotherapists’ role in patient education.
