Course Description

Language has been conceptualized in different ways in both linguistic and folk theories—as a formal system that consists of sound, lexis and grammar; as a communication system by which people express their ideas and conduct their day-to-day transactions; as an ideology that is deeply embedded in power relations, etc.  This writing course introduces and underscores the view of language as an ideology. It takes language experience to be one of the most essential human experiences, by means of which we construct knowledge, social relations and identities. A wide selection of course materials—including articles from various sources, video documentaries, and movie excerpts —will be read, viewed, and discussed to illustrate the key concepts and theory of language as an ideology. Writing assignments and group research projects are designed to further your understanding of the social and ideological nature of language. Emphasis will also be placed on academic vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. This is a writing-intensive course. You will be asked to write on a regular basis. In your writing, you are encouraged to apply the new concepts and theory that we learn about language to critically examine your own and others’ language use in social and academic lives. I recognize that each of you bring to this writing course your own view and theory of language—what it is and what it does, as well as a wealth of uniquely individual experience of language use in both your first language (L1) and a second language (L2). As such, this course will build on your current knowledge and experience and encourage you to integrate new ideas you learn about language into your writing and to use these ideas to guide your daily practices. I intend this course to be a space where we will share our views and experiences openly and raise any doubt or questions that we may have about language. Together, we will examine, question, critique, and experience the role that language plays in our social and academic lives through a variety of course activities
