course

Geochronology (Geo 564)

  • The course objective is to estimate the ages of various rock types and minerals utilizing and determining the relative and absolute age  dating Radiometric) the isotope decay (i.e. Chronology) uses (the half-life) of radioactive decay and the growth of naturally occurring nuclides to understand the timing of geological events and the use of radioactive isotopes to understand the times of geological phenomena.

  • Introduces students to earth science basics, thermochronology, the diffusion of minerals and heat on Earth, the behaviour of luminous elements, magmatic gap processes of the Earth and ISOCHRON.

  • Radiogenic isotope geology touches the fundamental aspects of nuclear fission, radioactive decay and growth of radioactive chemical elements, laying down geological applications of various isotopic systems such as U-Pb, Sm-Nd, Lu-Hf, U-disequilibrium series to determine the ages of rocks, minerals, comets, etc. for studies Which ranges from the genesis of petroglyphs, the evolution of the earth's crust to the genesis of ore.

  • Learn geological time calculation methods.

  • Postgraduate give a lecture on the application of chronological geology.

  • A prior knowledge of basic chemistry, physics and mineralogy is assumed.
