Polysomnography Course and Workshop

Course Description:

This course is designed to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to perform all types of sleep studies. Participants of the program should know about communicate and interact effectively with sleep disorders patients. They are trained in the physical and physiological aspects of sleep disorders, familiarity with the different sleep disorders, application of monitoring electrodes utilizing the 10-20 International system as well as other ancillary monitoring equipment, calibrate monitoring equipment, and utilize proper montage and protocol used during PSG studies.

The participants will be trained to prepare the patient for testing and successfully perform PSG studies, to be familiar with EKG and EEG abnormalities and the use of proper documentation and note taking, have a good understanding and be able to administer CPAP, BPAP, and Oxygen Therapy.

There will be good exposure to the scoring of sleep records; however, attaining competency in scoring can be achieved through advanced courses.

Course Objectives:

At the completion of this course, the participants should know about:

  • Have a good understanding of normal and abnormal sleep patterns.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of sleep.
  • Recognize life-threatening cardiac dysrhythmias.
  • Understand the operation of common ancillary equipment.
  • Perform a complete patient hookup for overnight polysomnography.
  • Initiate, monitor, and complete an overnight polysomnographic study.
  • Understand the process of scoring.
  • Apply Positive Airway Pressure and oxygen therapy.
