Course Description:

 

This is a three-credit hour course of full academic year.  It is a clinical training course; the second in the series of three clinical courses in pediatric dentistry graduate program. The course consists of five clinical sessions of three (3) hours each per week. The concept of comprehensive care is adapted. Pediatric patients of all age groups are provided comprehensive dental care.

 

 

Course Objectives:

 

1.         To train students in provision of comprehensive dental care to children of all age groups, utilizing various psychological behavior management techniques if and when required.

 

2.         Provision of dental care to children with special care needs including those with dental/oral anomalies and systemic conditions.

 

3.         The course is also meant to provide the students with training in provision of comprehensive dental treatment under Nitrous Oxide-Oxygen sedation and conscious sedation utilizing various drugs.

 

4.         The students are also exposed to management of various dental emergencies in pediatric patients

 

 

Evaluation: 

 

It is a graded Specialty Course. The students are assessed each session by the assigned faculty in the following aspects.

The course director monitors the students’ progress; and students are informed and counseled in case of any shortcoming during the course. The students have to complete clinical requirements for various procedures carried out in children. These are overall requirements over the period of three years in the Program

 

 

 

Clinic Policy: 

 

 

The student is required to perform during:

 

 

First Visit of the Patient: 

 

1.         Record personal data and case history (Dental / Medical).

 

2.         Introduce the child to the clinical environment.

 

3.         Examine the child and record findings.

 

4.         Take necessary radiographs and models if indicated.

 

5.         Give oral hygiene instruction after disclosing the plaque and do rubber cup/brush prophylaxis.  Fluoride application (if indicated) should be done, following approval by the instructor.

 

6.         Dispense a toothbrush for the patient, write his/her name over it and keep it in the cabinet for his/her use during subsequent appointment.

 

7.         Formulate a treatment plan on a sheet of paper.

 

8.         Present treatment plan to the instructor.  When approved, rewrite the treatment plan in the chart and have the instructor sign it.

 

 

Subsequent Visits:

 

9.         Proceed with treatment as planned.

 

10.       At each visit, the first ten minutes should be allocated to teaching the patient a proper way of brushing utilizing disclosing solution or tablet and his/her own toothbrush.

 

11.       If the patient has rampant caries or large cavities in two quadrants; caries control procedure has to be carried out.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Students’ Responsibilities:

 

 

1.         Give appointment to the patient.

 

2.         Make sure that the patient attends the clinic.  Re-confirm the appointment with parent 24 hours before the appointment.  If the patient is not attending, book another patient.

 

3.         Be on time for the clinic.

 

 

If the student fails to attend for any reason, it is his/her responsibility to:

 

            a.         Cancel the patient.

 

            b.         Notify the course director about it.

 

c.         Write a letter to the course director explaining the reason for his/her absence.

 

            d.         Notify the booking staff and arrange for the next appointment.

 

The student who fails to follow the above steps, he/she would be considered absent without excuse and be given “F” grade for the session.

 

 

 

Attendance Policy: 

 

As per policy of the University; no student is allowed to miss 25% or more sessions during the course.
