About the course
Course name: Mining Microbiology (MBIO 346)
About the course
Microbial ecology and role of microorganisms in pollution and bioremediation – Factors affecting microbial growth and interactions between microorganisms with each other and microbial transformation of different metals and their tolerance to heavy metals (mechanical and physiological resistance).
Main objectives of the course
1- Microbes in oil prospecting
2- Microbial Pollution
3- Applications of microbes for metal extraction from wastes.
4- Microbes' role in forming and degrading minerals and fossil fuels.
Learning Outcomes
At end of the course, the student will be able:
- To recognize the chemical structure of a microbial cell and the general structure of a microbial cell, differences in the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms
- To define the microbial transformation of different metals.
- To differentiate between the different theories of microbial-metal absorptions.
- To analyze data.
- To work effectively in a team.
- To bear responsibility and cope with positive and negative criticism from others.
