Course Description:
This course is divided into three different major areas:
- Innovation and entrepreneurship: it provide a practical guide to address a medical problem with a technical innovative solution that is commercially feasible and applicable. The course starts with identifying a medical problem then seeking an innovative technical biomedical solution. Afterwards, the course briefly reviews assessment methods of concepts and acquiring market research reports. The course provides an overview of regulatory requirements and project management skills, which is a must to comprehend by students. Finally, to put learnt subjects and skills into practice, a business plan will be developed as a final project. For the practical part of the course, students will learn how to write scientific biomedical research papers and proposals.
- Project management: Projects is one of the main tasks biomedical engineers and those who deal with healthcare equipment have to manage frequently. This course introduces project management from a manager standpoint in healthcare industry. Best practices and effective tools used in the vital aspects of main three project management areas (i.e. scope, schedule and cost).
- Medical devices regulations.
Course Objectives:
- Innovation and entrepreneurship
- Understanding the basics of biomedical technology innovation, regulation and commercialization.
- Practice finding, innovating and implementing technical solutions for medical needs, utilizing up-to-date methodologies.
- Examine the successes and failures of innovative biotechnology business start-ups through case studies.
- Implementing a business plan that may stimulate a successful biotechnology business start-up and a promising entrepreneur.
- Learn how to scientifically write a biomedical research paper and proposals.
- Project management
- Understand the importance of project management.
- Apply good project management methodology and practice in healthcare projects.
- Expose students to important skills and techniques used to plan and control project cost, schedule and scope.
- Familiarize students with common forms and procedures (e.g. project charter, work breakdown structure, scope statement, etc.) used in project management.
- Medical Devices Regulation
Teaching strategies:
For the lecture course, each session will be divided into two sections. The first section will be a traditional lecture, utilizing PowerPoint slides and multimedia, from which students will learn concepts and basics of the covered topic. Then, the second section will be more interactive by dividing students into work groups and implement what they learnt in the first section, using their laptops. In regard to the practical portion of the course, students will learn basics and concepts of technical writing at the beginning of the semester. Afterwards, they will implement what they learnt in a scientific proposal as a final project.
