PHCL 431- Pharmacoeconomcis

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION
Pharmacoeconomics is the study of the costs and consequences (outcomes) associated with the use of pharmaceutical services and products. In this course we will discuss the role of pharmacoeconomics in the decision-making process and the different techniques of pharmacoeconomics evaluation and patients oriented outcome measures.

II. COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the completion of the course series, the student should be able to:
1. Describe the rationale and importance of pharmacoeconomic evaluation techniques in the decisions making process.
2. Outline the steps for conducting a pharmacoeconomic evaluation.
3. Identify and classify costs associated with pharmacy products and services; describe controversies related to identifying costs, discounting benefits, and the need of sensitivity analysis.
4. Describe, compare cost minimization, cost effectiveness, cost utility, cost benefit, and cost-of-illness analyses.
5. Explain the theoretical basis of utility measurement and QALYs.
6. Compare the various methods of evaluating health benefits in monetary terms.
7. Identify the basics of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and patient reported outcomes (PRO); describe the importance of measuring HRQoL; compare and contrast generic HRQoL measures with disease-specific HRQoL measures.
8. Explain common methods used in pharmacoeconomic modelling (decision analysis, Markov modelling) and the need to sensitivity analysis.
9. Critically appraise pharmacoeconomic and health outcomes literature.
10. Apply basic principles of pharmacoeconomics to the evaluation of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy services.
11. Communicate clearly and effectively (verbally and nonverbally).
12. Display professional attitude, ethical behaviour, integrity and trust
13. Work effectively with colleagues in team-based activities and define clear roles and responsibilities for team members.
