Course Overview

The primary objective of this course is to present an overview of different types of biomaterials used in field of biomedical engineering and their properties. The course also covers the interaction between materials and biological systems.

Biomaterials 332 will concentrate on fundamental principles in biomedical engineering and material science. This course uses a combination of lectures, student presentations, and self-directed learning to examine the structure and properties of hard materials (ceramics, metals) and soft materials (polymers).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:

Describe different types of materials used in biomedical applications.
Describe methodologies to analyze physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of biomaterials.
Explain important considerations in the design and utilization of biomaterials for biomedical applications and in the context of regulatory frameworks.
Explain potential (advantageous and adverse) cellular and physiological reactions to the presence of biomaterials in particular applications.

Course Rules

Attendance: Attending at least 75% of the lectures is mandatory otherwise students will be denied access to the final exam.

Make-up exam: NO MAKE-UP EXAM for students who have missed the scheduled examination time, except in case of special circumstances accompanied with the necessary documentation to be submitted and approved by the department no later than one week from the initial scheduled examination.
