Sri. Darbhe Jayarama Bhat

He did Early education in his native place in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka State and Higher education M.Sc. (Biosciences) from Mysore University, M.Phil. (Mycology & Pl Pathology), Ph.D. (Botany) and D.Sc. (Botany – Mycology) from Madras University.  His Research specialization is Mycology (Taxonomy and Biology of Fungi).

He started his career Associate Professor in Department of Biology, Asmara University, Eritrea (1881-87). Later he held multiple positions as Research Scientist in Department of Applied Botany, Mangalore University (1988-90), Reader in Department of Microbiology, Goa University (1990-94), Professor in Department of Botany, Goa University (1994-2011)  and Visiting Professor in School of Science, Mae Fah Luang University, Chiang Rai, Thailand (2012-14), Dali University, Kunming, China (2017).  

He has taught Mycology & Plant Pathology, General Microbiology and Ecology courses to UG and PG students in various universities in India, Ethiopia, Thailand. He has guided 15 students for Ph.D. and several M.Sc. students on taxonomy, biodiversity and ecology of micro-fungi.  He has worked on several major research projects sponsored by Funding agencies such as DST, CSIR, MOEF and Planning Commission, Govt. of India, while in Goa University established a “Fungus Culture Repository’ in Goa University. 

He has discovered numerous new genera and species of micro-fungi from the forests of Western Ghats, NE region and Andaman Islands. He has published over 200 research papers on taxonomy and biology of fungi, in national and international journals. He has written 2 books and edited 5 books on fungal taxonomy and diversity studies.He has visited/Collaborated with several reputed educational institutes/universities in Ethiopia, United Kingdom, Canada, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Thailand, China and USA.

He was Recipient of (i) Lifetime Achievement Award and (ii) Shome Memorial Award of Mycological Society of India. He was editor of ‘Kavaka’, Transactions of Mycological Society of India and Associate Editor, ‘Fungal Diversity’, an International Journal of Mycology. Presently, he is associated as head of Biology, at Vishnugupta Vishwavidyapeetam, Ashoke, Gokarna, Karnataka, India.
