A RARE ANATOMICAL VARIATION OF THE SCIATIC NERVE AND ITS RELATION TO PIRIFORMIS MUSCLE-CASE REPORT
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body, branching from the sacral plexus and
conveying sensory and motor functions through the vast sciatic foramen beneath the piriformis
muscle. Some writers suggest that sciatic nerve variations could be a cause of piriformis syndrome
that has gone unnoticed. In many clinical and surgical circumstances, the variance of sciatic nerve
division at different levels of the body makes diagnostic and therapeutic procedures difficult. The
ability to recognize variations in the sciatic nerve quickly improves surgical precision and
effectiveness.
