Photocatalytic and photoluminescence activities of Se and Se/ZnO nanostructured thin films

Se and Se/ZnO nanostructured films were synthesized using vapor transport technique. SEM observations showed nanoparticles mixed with nanowires morphology for Se films and nanorods morphology for Se/ZnO films. XRD revealed that the Se/ZnO film contains several crystallographic peaks which were indexed to hexagonal ZnO crystallographic phase besides to the peaks of hexagonal Se phase.The overall absorption of Se/ZnO nanostructured thin film was higher than that of Se nanostructured thin film whereas the optical band gap was lower. The obtained band gap values for Se and Se/ZnO films were 2.49 and 2.55 eV, respectively. Four strong emission peaks around 566, 677, 767, and 827 nm were observed for the Se nanostructured single layer film. No addition emission peaks were observed for Se/ZnO nanostructured thin film but little change in peak intensities was obtained. Se/ZnO nanostructured thin films have excellent photocatalytic activities toward methylene blue degradation whereas Se nanostructured films have poor activities. Se/ZnO nanostructured thin film caused 90.3% of MB degradation after 375 min illumination inferring that the Se/ZnO heterojunction is superior to be accountable for dye pollutant degradation.
