COURSE TITLE: GERIATRIC PROSTHODONTICS

 

CREDIT HOURS: 1 (1 Lecture, Second semester)

 

PREREQUISITES: NONE

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

492 DEN is a new course in the curriculum which covers Geriatric Prosthodontics and will be given to the fifth year students during the second semester of the academic year 1435/1436. During the course, the students will be asked to attend the course lectures and pass the didactic exam.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Demonstrate basic knowledge of the age related changes in the elderly and to be able to differentiate it from the pathological changes.
  2. Demonstrate basic knowledge in the construction of proper treatment planning for geriatric patients.
  3. Demonstrate basic knowledge in prosthodontic care of geriatric patients.

 

COURSE TOPICS:

 

  1. Epidemiology: Dental Prosthetic Status of Elderly
  2. Age Related Changes of the masticator apparatus
  3. Nutrition in Elderly
  4. Psychiatric Changes in Elderly
  5. The Effects of Aging on Drug Therapy
  6. Disease Related Changes in Elderly
  7. Prosthodontic Treatment Planning in Elderly
  8. Prosthodontic Care of Elderly, treatment with fixed prostheses
  9. Prosthodontic Care of Elderly, treatment with removable prostheses

COURSE PROTOCOL:

 

 

  1. ATTENDANCE

 

  1. Attendance to the lecture is mandatory and of primary importance.
  2. Being ten (10) minutes late to the lecture will be considered as absent.
  3. Twenty-five percent (25%) of absence from the lecture will deprive the students from taking the final exam (university rules and regulations).
  4. In order for an absence to be excused, it must be approved by the vice dean for academic affairs on the day of the absence.

 

  1. EXAMINATION

 

  • There will be a mid-term didactic exam.
  • Quizzes will be given as indicated in the schedule or at the course director’s discretion. No-make ups will be allowed for quizzes that are missed.
  • There will be a final didactic exam.

 

  1. CHEATING
    • Cheating will not be tolerated. Students found cheating during the quizzes and the mid-term exam will be given an automatic failure.
