Design of HHO generator to produce hydrogen on demand for internal combustion engine

Others, M Al Suwaidan and . 2015

Enhancing the combustion process of today's engines necessitates finding practical methods to increase fuel millage as well as reduce harmful emissions, with minor modifications on the main structure of the engine. With the decrease in oil resources, there is a need for other sources of fuel and chemical production. Hydrogen is receiving considerable attention as an alternative fuel owing to its high flame propagation rates within the engine cylinder in comparison to other fuels. Once it mixes with other fuel, it increases the stability of the engine combustion. This project is aimed to design a hydrogen generator capable to supply the engine with an “on demand” source of hydrogen. HHO dry cell was chosen as an economic design where hydrogen could be produced by using the principle of electrolysis to split water into its two molecules, hydrogen and oxygen, in gas form. An electrical source representing the car battery was used for this principle. In addition, potassium hydroxide (KOH) was used as an electrolyte to enhance the splitting of water molecules. The HHO dry cell systems can be configured to produce HHO gas on-demand either through an on/off switch or as long as your vehicle's engine is running. Three cells were designed with different configurations and the production rates of HHO gas from each were compared. No noticeable differences were found in the production rate from the three cells. Finally, the HHO gas was introduced to a gasoline engine through inlet air. A remarkable decrease in the exhaust emissions such as NOx, HC and CO was detected when using HHO gas with gasoline. Results confirmed the potential use of HHO gas in gasoline engines for protecting the environment.
