What pushes cyclists to grab their phones? The relative influence of risk perception and technology affinity
English summary
A multinational online survey of 15,312 adult cyclists in 44 countries is analyzed with structural equation modeling to test whether phone use while riding relates to self-reported crashes and whether it is better explained by risk perception or by affinity for technology. Phone use was associated with more crashes in the past five years (β = 0.18), after controlling for age, weekly cycling hours and city size. Technology affinity (β = 0.21) and self-rated cycling performance were positively associated with phone use, while risk perception was negatively associated (β = −0.11), so technology affinity carried more weight. The pattern held in both higher-cycling and other countries, suggesting that risk messaging alone may not be enough to reduce phone use while cycling.
