Beyond borders: a quantitative study of socio-cultural factors in Saudi youth’s overseas tourism
This study explores the socio-cultural factors influencing Saudi youth's overseas tourism, focusing on how cultural norms, social obligations and regional differences shape their motivations and experiences. The study draws on survey data from 1683 Saudi men and women aged 18–35 years. The results reveal that social norms and cultural obligations significantly influence tourism behaviour, with a strong preference for international trips driven by a desire for new experiences, cultural engagement and temporary distancing from local expectations. Regional variations emerged, with respondents from more traditional and less central areas showing a greater tendency to seek autonomy and negotiate cultural constraints through travel. These findings underscore the importance of understanding socio-cultural influences on tourism, offering insights for policymakers and tourism operators aiming to tailor experiences to Saudi youth. This study contributes to broader knowledge on how young travellers navigate socio-cultural dynamics within global tourism practices.
