Losing the Scent in Yousef Al-Mohaimeed's Wolves of the Crescent Moon

Goodreads data reader response Saudi novel titles in translation Wolves of the Crescent Moon

This study considers the influence of translated titles on reader interpretation by comparing English and Arabic Goodreads reviews of Wolves of the Crescent Moon. The importance of this study lies in the underexplored role of translated titles in reader response and in the literary consideration of the chosen text as a modern Saudi novel. This study attempts to answer two questions: First, how do readers' interpretations of the Arabic and English versions of WotCM differ across the two linguistic contexts? Second, how do these reader interpretations compare with the titles in the source and target languages? The findings showed differences between the Arabic and English reviews in their evaluations of style and in their assessments of the thematic convergence of the three narratives embedded in the novel. This may indicate the pivotal role of titles in interpretation and the importance of translating their themes. The study concludes with recommendations for translators to incorporate important themes into target titles and for future studies to expand investigations of readers of target texts.
