Non-Pharmacological interventions for managing fatigue in parkinson’s disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

fatigue Parkinson’s disease systematic review meta-analysis occupational therapy rehabilitation

Fatigue is one of the most prevalent and disabling non-motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease, yet it remains poorly understood and inadequately treated. This systematic review and meta-analysis synthesised evidence on non-pharmacological interventions for fatigue in Parkinson’s disease. Electronic databases were searched following PRISMA guidelines, and randomised controlled trials evaluating fatigue-related outcomes were included. Interventions were categorised and analysed where appropriate.

The findings indicate that evidence for non-pharmacological fatigue interventions in Parkinson’s disease is limited and heterogeneous. Exercise-based interventions demonstrated a preliminary signal of benefit; however, overall certainty of evidence was low due to methodological limitations and variability in outcome measures. No randomised controlled trials specifically targeting fatigue using cognitive behavioural approaches were identified. The review highlights the need for standardised, Parkinson’s disease-specific fatigue measures and adequately powered trials with longer follow-up.
