Measuring safe walking access to public transport in Riyadh using SOLWEIG and the PHS model under extreme hot conditions

safe walking distance; public transport accessibility; PHS; hot-arid; Riyadh

This paper aimed to measure the safe walking distance to the newly established public transport network in Riyadh during extreme summer heat. To determine the safe walking distance, the mean radiant temperature was calculated using the SOLWEIG model and ERA5 climate data as inputs to the Predicted Heat Strain (PHS; ISO 7933) model. To determine coverage and safe access indices, the actual network distances to the nearest public transport stop or station were calculated from the model results and compared with the safe walking distance. Results show that safe walking access to public transport remains very limited across Riyadh under extreme heat.
