The stylistic distancing of Montresor’s guilt in “the Cask of Amontillado”
This paper analyses Montresor’s unreliable narration in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” portraying him as a manipulative and remorseless storyteller who exerts precise control over the narrative. Stylistic features such as limited point of view, schematic language, and social deixis reveal Montresor’s calculated voice, selective omissions, and emotional detachment from Fortunato. This analysis highlights the narrative as a reflective egotistical narration of a remorseless murderer, rather than a morally ambiguous deathbed confession.
