Simulation-Based Training for Ultrasound Practice

Ultrasound imaging has become the most common diagnostic tool in healthcare services due to its characteristic as a mobile, costless and safe imaging device. However, mastering the ultrasound skills needed to assure best practice is a challenge. The concerns connected with training in clinical settings, including supervision shortages, busy environments and the necessity to maintain patient safety, can all impact the quality of ultrasound training. However, virtual reality (VR) simulation as an alternative method of ultrasound training would provide an opportunity for novice ultrasound practitioners to improve their cognitive and psychomotor skills and proceed to optimum ultrasound practice. This chapter highlights the rationale behind the incorporation of simulation-based training for ultrasound practice and discusses the effects of such training methods on ultrasound skills acquisition.
