Education

1995-1997

  • Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida. Majoring in speech recognition. Dissertation topic is “Studying Pharyngeal and Emphatic Sounds in Arabic Speech Recognition.” Arabic emphatic and pharyngeal sounds were studied from the speech recognition field point of view. The study concentrated on finding the unique characteristics of these sounds, comparing these sounds to English sounds, and investigating the effect of these sounds on the Arabic speech recognition systems. A complete Arabic speech recognition system was built and tested on Arabic alphabet. Several speech recognition algorithms were investigated and compared in the case of Arabic language.

1992-1994

  • MS in Computer Engineering, Florida Institute of Technology. Majoring in speech processing. Designed and implemented an algorithm for speech compression. The algorithms used frequency and Cepstrum domains to extract important signal characteristics that are enough to restore the signal in the decompression process.

1983-1988

  • BS in Computer Engineering, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

  Experience:
 Dec 2012- Present

  • Professor, Computer Engineering Department, College of computer and information sciences, King Saud University. He is currently teaching Signals and Systems (CEN340). Supervising M.Sc., PhD, and Bachelor graduating projects.

January 2009- November 2012

  • Associate professor, Computer Engineering Department, College of computer and information sciences, King Saud University. For now Courses taught: Digital Speech Processing (Master course CEN547), Seminar in Computer Engineering (CEN591 Master Course), Selected Topics in Computer Engineering (CEN491).  Signals and Systems (CEN340). Supervising Bachelor graduating projects.

  June 1999- December 2008

  • Assistant professor, Computer Engineering Department, College of computer and information sciences, King Saud University. Courses taught: Computer architecture (CEN321), Signals and Systems (CEN340), Digital signal Processing (Master course CEN543), Logic Lab I (CEN212), Selected Topics in Computer Engineering (CEN491 for undergraduate  level & CEN559 for graduate level), Introduction to Computing (SCS206), and Digital control systems (CEN455) and CEN456 as its lab. . Supervised many Bachelor graduating projects.

Sep 1998-2000

  • Al-Khaleej Institute for Training and Electronic Industries, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, teaching assistance in computer science and engineering major.

Feb 1998- June 1999

  • National Information Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, working on research and development projects. These projects are digital signal processing and image processing related.

1988-1992
Research and Development Center (RDC), National Information Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Worked for the RDC for overseas design project contracts as follows:

  • Jan 1990-Jul 1991: Jetta Computer products Inc., Houston, Texas. In this project, a Digital Signal Processing (DSP) board based on TMS320C25 TI DSP processor and TRW DSP chip was developed, implemented and tested. Digital speech compression  theories were designed and implemented using this board. Speech compression ratio of 1:25 was achieved. This system was used for a low cost hand-held transceiver.

  • Dec. 1988-Dec.1989: ALELM Research and Development Corp., Virginia Beach, Virginia. In this project, a DSP board based on TMS320C25 TI DSP processor was designed. This design was used to run and investigate DSP algorithms, i.e., Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), Inverse FFT, digital filters.

  Research Interests:

  1. Speech recognition
  2. Arabic language processing
  3. Arabic speech processing
  4. Artificial neural networks
  5. Speech corpora analysis, design, and evaluation
  6. Speaker recognition
