General Chemistry 1 (CHEM 101)
Common first year (4 Credit hours)
Course Description 101
CHEM is an introduction to general chemistry focusing on the units of measurement; state of matter; the structures of atoms, molecules and ions; the stoichiometry of chemical equation; gases, thermochemistry and solutions.
Course Main Objective
After finishing the course, the student will be able to:
- classify matter and distinguish properties of matter as physical and chemical;
- master the conversion between different units of measurement;
- describe the structures of atoms, molecules and ions;
- compose and interpret the name of ionic compounds (including transitional metal compounds) and names of molecular compounds, oxoacids and anions and hydrates;
- demonstrate the basic concepts of quantum numbers, shells, subshells, orbitals, and their relative energies and identify with a set of quantum numbers any electron in any element;
- explain and apply the stoichiometry of chemical equations;
- recognize the properties of gases; compare and conclude the concepts of Charles' Law, Boyle's Law, and Avogadro's Law; perform calculations using the ideal Gas Equation and summarize the kinetic molecular theory;
- state the 1st law of thermodynamics in equation form, calculate and utilize the signs of DH° in direct and indirect (Hess’s law);
- classify the physical properties of solutions and calculate concertation of a solutions;
- label and carry out the calculation of colligative properties for nonelectrolyte solutions.
