Temporomandibular Disorders and Occlusion
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complex and its associated cranio-mandibular structure play a vital role in the treatment and management of dental conditions. All dental treatments should aim toward maintaining the normal function of the TMJ without alteration. Therefore, dental practitioners should acquire the basic knowledge to enable them to examine their cases and document any abnormal findings before the commencement of treatment.
The temporomandibular disorders (TMD) course covers the basic craniomandibular functional anatomy, the etiology and causes of functional disturbances, its diagnosis and treatment modalities. The role of cervical musculatures and head posture is also presented. This course is offered to orthodontic post-graduate students with a focus on the mechanical aspects of the function and treatment of the TMJ complex and itصs associated masticatory system and functional disturbances. Special emphasis on malocclusion and how it relates to the development of TMD is discussed.
