Application of N-Bromosuccinimide in the Quantitative Analysis of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine in Pharmaceutical Dosage Forms

Ali, Masoom Raza Siddiqui, Sarfaraz Alam, Md Sajid . 2013

n analytical method has been developed for the determination of N-acetyl L cysteine in pure and pharmaceutical preparations using spectrophotometry. In the current method the oxidizing property of N-Bromosuccinimide has been exploited and made to react with N-acetyl cysteine, thus the oxidation of n-acetyl l-cysteine by N-Bromosuccinimide (NBS) was made the basis of the current method development. The oxidation product absorbs maximally as 352 nm and the drug obeyed the beer's law in the concentration range of 2–44 μg ml–1. The mass spectrometric treatment of the oxidation product showed that the product formed due to the oxidation of drug with NBS resulted in the formation of sulphonic acid derivative of N-acetyl—cysteine. The statistical treatment of data was performed and the limits of detection (LOD) and limits of detection quantitation (LOQ) for the proposed method are 0.572 and 1.732 μg ml–1, respectively. The proposed procedure has been successfully applied for the determination of N-acetyl L-cysteine in pharmaceutical formulations. The results obtained by the proposed method were statistically compared with the reference method using t and F values and found that there is no major difference between the two methods.
