Course Information
Course Title Research Project in E-Business
Course Code MIS 599
Course Description This course will enhance the student’s research capabilities. It provides the student with the basic research concepts and an understanding of how to conduct research. The student is supposed to tackle a research-oriented problem (upon the approval of the department) in some aspect of E-Business and its applications and explore the feasibility of providing computer-based solutions to this problem.

Course Objectives

  • Be able to demonstrate their ability to address and engage and to generate justifiable solutions to an E-Business problem.
  • Be able to demonstrate their ability to address and engage and to generate justifiable solutions to an E-Business problem.
  • Have achieved an advanced understanding of a specialized area of E-business or of interlinked areas of E-business.
  • Be able to demonstrate a capacity to apply theoretical knowledge to E-business problem.
  • Be able to present the project outcomes both in writing and orally.

 

Learning outcomes
 After completing the course, students will be expected to be able to:

  • Recognize the importance of research.
  • Discuss types of study design, demonstrate the research methodology.
  • Select the proper research method for the research.
  • Discriminate between data collection methods and techniques.
  • Demonstrate capability of working with group and individually.
  • Present projects using critical thinking process.

  • Any textbooks and materials related to the selected research topic can be sourced.
  • Various materials available online from the University digital library are required to be used.

 The materials required for MIS 599 course is available on the learning management system: LMS.ksu.edu.sa. It is highly recommended that students print the required material for each class and have them available.

Recommended Background
For this course it is highly recommended that student has computing and analytical skills including some business analytical experience. In addition, a good knowledge of basic concepts of  databases and system analysis are required.

Teaching and Student Engagement Strategies used in the Course

  • Explicit instruction.
  • Lecture and facilitation for student learning (student-centered).
  • Student engagement through the following learning activities:
  • Reading textbook pages and summarizing the main ideas.
  • Self-Learning and research assignment.
  • Analyses of business cases.
  • Brainstorming session.
  • Direct question and response. 
  • Group-problem solving.
  • Presentation and comparing multiple solutions.
  • Cooperative learning.
  • Peer student interaction.
  • Team online collaboration tools: student should use online collaboration tools in order to practice group communications to carry out the weekly assignments. The activities and minutes of meetings have to be documented in the assignment report.
  • Group discussion board on MIS 599 LMS.ksu.edu.sa: student should use the Blackboard discussion board as the main place to ask questions you have about the course. However, please feel free to make full use of my office hours in the university. However, if you have a question, someone else may have a similar one, and every student will possibly benefit from the answers being available on the course Blackboard system. Besides, please make an effort to answer your classmates’ questions. In grading your participation in the course assignments, I will include your contributions to the discussion board. Nevertheless, you will not be penalized for wrong answers/clarifications during your participation on the discussion board (or even in class).

  • First assessment:  identifying research problems in E-business - 20%
  • Second assessment:  organizing E-business research  - 20%
  • Final project and Presentation -  60%
