CE 496 & 497 - Graduation Project

This capstone design project involves a number of students working as one team tackling different aspects of the civil engineering works. The projects span two semesters, beginning with the development of a project plan, whereby students define end-user needs, client needs, design objectives and constraints, and metrics for success. Proceeding through concept generation and selection, and then through the design stages, each team ultimately produces a solution for civil engineering problems that meet the project objectives.

Phase-I
This phase introduces knowledge of ethical responsibilities, public policies, administration, leadership, and contemporary issues related to Civil Engineering practice. It also includes project selection, data collection, identification of real-life constraints (e.g. economy, environmental, global, and contemporary issues), generation of possible design alternatives considering client needs, and preparation of a work plan for implementing and completing the project. All work conducted during the semester must be compiled in a final report.

Phase-II
This is the implementation phase of the capstone design project. It includes analysis of design criteria, parameters and constraints for the design alternatives to select the preferred option, and design calculation and/or use of experimental tools (if required) to refine the design. The final report to be submitted by the team includes project title, description, objectives and constraints; data and assumption; design alternatives and analysis; details of preferred design analysis and calculations along with pertinent drawings; and summary and conclusions.
